Miss Micek is a current member of the Nebraska Teacher Corps program.  This opportunity assists teachers in integrating service learning projects into the regular curriculum.  All projects address curriculum standards while exposing students to issues they can impact in their community.

Room 15 has worked on two projects this year:

PUMA PRIDE PEN PALS:

The third graders were paired with elderly members of the Hillside Retirement home in Bellevue.  They corresponded with their new friends, sent monthly crafts and treats, and made a visit in December where the children personally delivered their December craft, visited with their pen pal, and performed a holiday concert for the residents.  The students learned what valuable members of the community the elderly are, what great friends they make, and brought a smile to a lot of faces!

PENNY DRIVE:

After researching needs in the community the students decided to organize a Penny and Hygiene Drive to benefit the YWCA Domestic Violence program.  The 3rd Graders have organized the entire school and are collecting pennies weekly throughout the months of March and April.  To date they have collected over $500 and 75 Hygiene Items.  The totals are graphed and compared weekly (a great math magnet activity!).  The check and items will be presented to the YWCA at a ceremony at Spring Lake in May.  We are so proud of the difference our students make in our South Omaha community!!!
