In your class you have been studying about communities and Spanish Markets.  Look at the pictures below to take a tour of a Spanish Market.

At the Market, there are many types of artwork for sale.  This is a picture of a wooden sculpture.  Many sculptures are of saints.

Families go together to the market.  This is a girl with her grandfather.  They are looking at some dried flowers that are for sale.

At the market, there are many types of weaving for sale.  Some weaving is made into clothes that people can wear.  Some of the weaving is made into blankets.  This is a picture different woven blankets.  Look at the bright colors and the many patterns there are.  Some of the patterns are based on designs that people made hundreds of years ago.  These people were called the Aztecs.  Other blankets have patterns that help to tell a story.

This is a picture of a different type of weaving.  This is called straw weaving.  The artist who made this picture used thin pieces of straw to create a picture.  The artists soak the straw in water before they begin so that it is soft.  Next, they have to work slowly and carefully so that the straw does not break or become too dry.

This is a picture of two artists who are making straw pictures.  Many artists teach their children how to make their art so that it will be carried down through their family.

There are traditional Spanish Markets in the United States too.  This music stand is at a Spanish Market in New Mexico.  Many people come to the market to listen to Spanish music like the mariachi bands.  People can also buy tapes and CDs of music to listen to at home.

This is a picture of an artist who is making a Santos .  A Santos is a statue of a saint.  Many artists bring Santos to sell at the market.  They are often made from wood or stone.  This artist is using a chisel to create his stone Santos.

This is another example of the sculptures that are for sale in the market.  This statues are made from wood, and are colored with special varnish.

This is a picture of the market La Cebada in Spain.  This stand offers fresh fruit and vegetables to shoppers.

This is a picture of Salsa Ranchera.  This salsa is made with chile and tomatoes and is served with Huevos Rancheros (country style eggs).  Many vendors at the market make their own fresh salsa to sell to shoppers.  There are many different kinds of salsa.

Here is the recipe for a Cuban Sandwich that is often sold at the Market.  Look at the ingredients.  Is it different from a sandwich we would eat in the United States?

1/2 loaf of bread
butter
mustard
mayonnaise
2 slices of turkey breast
2 slices of roast pork
1 slice of ham
1 slice of Swiss cheese
aluminum foil

Split the loaf and spread with mustard and mayonnaise. Layer the remaining ingredients and top with the other half of the bread. Lightly butter the OUTSIDE of the bread and wrap the sandwich in aluminum foil. Place on a skillet over low heat. Squish it with a heavier skillet on top of the wrapped sandwich and keep it there for a minute or two. Flip over and repeat for another minute or two. Unwrap and eat.
